Cynthia Pretty - Writer 59 Australia

I have seen many physiotherapists over the years, had acupuncture, worn a corset, done aqua therapy - all good short term solutions but never lasting ones

I have suffered from lower back pain since my early twenties, when I slipped my disc. My back governed my life choices, as I was always worried that it was going to 'go' and that I would then be bedridden for days. Having four children was demanding; all the constant carrying, bending, bracing etc and for a long time I had uneven hips, with one higher than the other, so I had a lot of sciatica and discomfort. I have seen many physiotherapists over the years, had acupuncture, worn a corset, done aqua therapy - all good short term solutions but never lasting ones. A friend suggested I see Sylviane, and from the outset I knew I had finally found the person to help me.

Sylviane's approach is multi-faceted. She will not only assess your physical problems, but she will help you work through the stresses and anxieties in your daily life that are contributing to your pain. It can be challenging! She listens with care and understanding, and explains everything clearly, both on a structural level and a psychological one. You feel supported and safe, whilst being required to partake in your own healing. This is empowering.

The exercises were tailored specifically to my needs, and by doing them daily I improved enormously. I am now much more aware of my posture, and the muscle groups needed to keep my back strong. My hips are level, I have far less pain, and I am no longer fearful. Sylviane has given me courage, and enabled me to have a better relationship with my back - and for that I can't thank her enough.

I increased my overall physical and sporting performances by 350% … at least … probably more

Sylviane is great. The exercises were just what I needed, very focused, got my mind aware and therefore my body functioning optimally and increased my overall physical and sporting performances by 350% … at least … probably more

The exercises were transformational.

I have suffered from joint aches and postural hypotension since childhood. One day on a visit to Sydney, my sister sent me to see Sylviane.
Receiving Sylviane's feedback on how I was using my body, I felt sure that  my body and most importantly "I" was understood.

The exercises were transformational. They helped me become much more conscious of how I moved in and interacted with the world, and showed me new ways of using my body to cycle, run and just move around. They gave me a grander viewpoint of the experience of life.

I have improved my posture, my body aches and postural hypotension by large measure. My outlook on life has benefitted greatly. Thank you, dearest Sylviane. Your gift vitality and quality of life is tremendous, and you have inspired me to keep taking the path towards my heart.

Chronic back pain now for the last 16 years, (and now)...my best result in 5 years with podium finishes in each of my events at the Australian Masters. Gold, silver, Bronze

I've had chronic back pain now for the last 16 years that stems from a weight lifting injury as a teenager. I would need regular maintenance to keep the injury in check and, after my last musculoskeletal specialist retired, I found myself moving from one therapist to the next.

I compete as a masters Beach sprinter and over the last couple of seasons was finding that   my body was breaking down towards the end of each season, with not only back pain but hamstring and neck pain as well. It was getting to the point where I could not lie down on my back for more than a minute without pain.

I first met Sylviane in a January through another beach sprinting team mate and have not looked back. Sylviane demonstrated an uncanny insight into how my body was functioning and quickly identified that the firing patterns of my hamstrings, back and glutes were out of synch, from years of my body reprogramming itself to protect my back. She then devised a range of tailored exercises that retrained the patterns of my body, which I followed religiously.

As a direct result of Sylviane's therapy, my back pain reduced considerably and I could sleep on my back again. I also finished my beach sprinting season injury free and with my best result in 5 years with podium finishes in each of my events at the Australian Masters championships. It was the first time that I had won individual medals at this level with a silver in the flags and bronze in the beach sprint, in addition to a gold in the relay.

I would gladly recommend Sylviane to anyone with chronic back pain or wanting more of a competitive edge in their sports.

“Wow, if I could have 5% of her knowledge of the human body, I would be so happy!”.

I discovered Sylviane when I was training to be a yoga teacher; she taught one of the sessions on our course. At the end of the session, all of us in the course announced “Wow, if I could have 5% of her knowledge of the human body, I would be so happy!”.

I had suffered from chronic tension for 20 years, so I decided to book in a session with her. I had seen various osteopaths and other specialists over the years, with varying degrees of success. But Sylviane’s approach was completely different, and entirely refreshing. It was almost as though - for the first time in my life - someone had seen the real me, hiding inside. She identified very quickly that my tension was psychologically-based, and within just a couple of sessions she was able to get to the source of the issue.

Previous specialists had - for the most part - treated only my body. Sylviane’s method, of treating the person, really paid off and I am now largely relieved of most of my tension.

Not only are there no words with which to thank Sylviane for what she has done for me, there are none with which I can recommend her knowledge and skills more highly.

After reoccurrence of a lower spinal injury, present in my life, sometimes more painful than others, for over 20 years, I recently saw Sylviane in her therapy clinic. At the time she firmly stated that we could resolve the immediate pain quite quickly and easily address the postural causes over only a period of months. I followed her instructions and recommendations absolutely and was rewarded with a reduction of pain from the very next day. This has continued unabated and now, 3 months into her program I am seeing and feeling deeply profound changes in my body, my breathing and my general level emotional wellbeing.

I have known Sylviane professionally over 12 years, mainly as a Senior Yoga Teacher and I remember well the first class I took with her and the absolute sense of completion and wellbeing that followed it – for days. From that moment I became a dedicated student and Sylvianes teachings have become part of the whole that I am. Now in my role as principal teacher of a 500-hour comprehensive yoga teacher training course I am proud to work alongside the talent and intuition of Sylviane James as she heads up the applied anatomy courses. Students, without exception leave her lectures inspired, galvanized and hungry for more.

She approached my chronic migraines by working on my upper neck and realigning my posture from the feet up... I find myself now able to maintain an essentially pain free and strong body.

In my fifties, I started to suffer from chronic migraines, as well as hip, lower back and neck pain.  Over the next few years, I saw a number of physiotherapists who provided me with temporary relief only of my symptoms. The migraines were debilitating and i was on medication without any other hope of treatment.

I began seeing Sylviane when I moved to the Northern Beaches and she approached the migraines by working on my upper neck and my overall posture so as to keep my neck in alignment. The results was nothing short of amazing.  I have gradually become stronger and have been mostly pain free since.

"For many years, I suffered from neck and shoulder injuries sustained in my teenage years. Additionally, my work as a consultant required hours of computer work daily further impacting my body and posture. Sylviane’s methods and techniques have worked really well for me. Her focus has been on finding the true root cause of my problems and then ensuring I’ve had the right body and mind skills to help myself heal. This has involved building my strength through assigned specific exercises and training my brain to move the right muscle or muscle group as needed.

Of course, this is still a work in progress. However, I feel that multiple layers of pain have been identified and resolved. I find myself now able to maintain an essentially pain free and strong body."

I had been told that I would need to have further back surgery... now back playing golf (Pain Free) on a weekly basis.

I was originally introduced to Sylviane by a work Colleage some six months ago. I’d already had back surgery and was still Having constant pain in my lower back.
Sylviane carried out a thorough review which included looking at my MRI photos and reports. I had been told that I would need to have further back surgery which would have involved Fusing on the lower disc’s. I must admit that at first I was skeptical that the treatment Sylviane was proposing would provide pain relief.

Six months on from my initial consultation my back pain has diminished significantly, the exercise programme she designed has worked and I have been able see her on a fortnightly basis
, where originally it was weekly. Sylviane continues to change the exercises and is working to a stratergy of strengthening my core muscles which is the key to providing me with a better Life style. I can say that I am  now back playing golf (Pain Free) on a weekly basis.

I understand that I still have a way to go on the programme and will have to continue with a maintenance type ongoing exercise disapline.
Ive found that I only get a results if I keep making time, daily to activate long dormant muscles. Its always easy to say “ ill did it tomorrow” but this programme only works if you mentally and physically
Commit to following Sylviane’s instructions. The best thing about the programme is that it only takes approx. 30 minutes per day and its pain free in the process.

Sylviane’s constant monitoring of my progress is the other main key to long term success and when we do regular checks on what im doing I can actually and very easily see the progress im making
and that in itself is a great motivator.

I cant thank Sylviane enough for the results todate and the idea of having to consider further surgery is no longer necessary. I recommend her to anyone who is suffering from constant pain

Don’t woory about spelling etc and the layout as I can put it on a word Document. Let me know if the principal of what im saying is what you are after

Brian Dolly GOLD Australian masters Beach sprinter - Sydney Australia

I was about to hang up my gloves. My performances were getting worse because of chronic back pain... Today my team won the last three Australian masters beach relays.

I wish to thank you for your expertise in bringing me back from close to retirement.

I am a beach sprinter with a successful history, but it all started going wrong several years ago with debilitating sciatic and lower and upper back pain. Constant injury and pain were leading me to consider retirement from the sport.

I was referred to yourself by a team mate and the results were outstanding. You diagnosed complete lack of core muscles, and what muscles were strong were not operating in the correct sequence.

Several months of consultation and doing the assigned drills (none of which involved weights, just fairly gentle body movements) fixed me up to the point where I could perform in my sport.

I am glad to say at the recent Rescue 2012, the International Life Saving World Championships, I came third in my sprint and first in my beach sprint relay. Without your assistance, this would not have happened.

So thanks again, and I recommend you to anyone who is not performing at their best.

...dysfunction that are often overlooked by run-of-the-mill practitioners. She has a nose for this that is the envy of blood hounds.

I was introduced to Sylviane in 2016 by my daughter Dr. Christabelle Yeoh.
I had a pilates injury 3 years earlier that caused nerve roots  compression of Lumbar 2, 3 and 4 spinal nerves. This resulted in a constant spasm of the left hip and upper thigh, in addition to low back pain.
I was treated by numerous physiotherapists and osteopaths over nearly 3 years without relief.
In one short week, Sylviane showed me the important exercises that mattered in producing significant relief.
Where other therapists focused on strengthening the "core"  without any improvement of symptoms, Sylviane targeted the lower transversus abdominis as that part of the core that really mattered. The relief of symptoms was experienced within a few days. This was a remarkable achievement that improved my quality of life significantly in a very short time.
Besides having an astute knowledge of the biomechanics of the body, Sylviane also has an intuitive feel for subconscious issues that may be causing bodily dysfunction that are often overlooked by run-of-the-mill practitioners. She has a nose for this that is the envy of blood hounds.

TESTIMONIALS

18 GOLD medals and 2 silvers at State and World Sprint, Gold in 2014 and 2010 for World Relay and the World Flags ....In fact, I couldn’t do what I do without you - I would have been invalided out years ago.

....and after three consecutive National Championship Beach Sprint titles in relay and Flags, I can attest to the success of Sylviane’s methodology.

Prior to being treated by Sylviane, I was prone to lower back pain, disc issues and occasional injuries which occurred just before competition when we practiced our “explosive” starts. My lower back would be so sore that I struggled to complete my training or warm-up, let alone perform to my potential.

My mindset was such that I thought it was part and parcel of participating in an unforgiving sport at an elite level in my fifties.  Sylviane taught me that this was not the case, and neither did I need to feel so stiff and sore after weekly training sessions.

With Sylviane’s treatment, I can feel the results: they are tangible, proven by my improved results between 2008 and 2016

18 GOLD medals and 2 silvers at State and World Sprint, relay and Flags competitions
I even started to compete in State Athletics with results such as:
Weight throw (Gold), Hammer & long jump (Silver) and javelin (Bronze)

I also trained for cycling in mountains of Kyrgyzstan, Kenya to Tanzania and my body did it all thanks to Sylviane and my training! Going good with mountaineering training too.

The small successes along the way are the only encouragement needed to stay with the process, and take heed of what Sylviane is teaching. Sylviane  has extensive knowledge and an intuitive manner, giving me absolute confidence, not only in her ability, but now in my ability to be sprinting well into my nineties!

In fact, I couldn’t do what I do without you - I would have been invalided out years ago.
